At GDO, we design and implement programs that help communities build stronger, more sustainable livelihoods. Our work focuses on agro-pastoral areas — where people depend on both farming and livestock — and where the effects of drought, poor land use, and limited opportunities are most visible.
We believe in long-term solutions that connect livelihoods, environment, and human development.
Program Areas
Featured Project: Sanaag Climate Education Campaign
Location: Sanaag Region, Somaliland
Duration: February – August 2025
Status: Ongoing
The Sanaag Climate Education Campaign was GDO’s first major field initiative — designed to raise awareness on environmental protection, reforestation, and sustainable water use. Working with schools, local leaders, and women’s groups, the campaign reached more than 1,000 people across three districts. Community workshops focused on tree planting, soil management, and the importance of protecting grazing land from overuse.
As a result, three community-led conservation zones were established, reducing illegal deforestation by nearly 40%.
This project represents the foundation of GDO’s long-term commitment to environmental education and grassroots climate action.
