Our Work

At GDO, we design and implement programs that help communities build stronger, more sustainable livelihoods. Our work focuses on agro-pastoral areas — where people depend on both farming and livestock — and where the effects of drought, poor land use, and limited opportunities are most visible.

We believe in long-term solutions that connect livelihoods, environment, and human development.

Program Areas

Livestock & Agriculture

Livestock & Agriculture

GDO promotes integrated farming systems that improve food security and income generation. Our activities include veterinary outreach, fodder production, and farmer training to help households produce more and waste less.

Education & Advocacy

Education & Advocacy

We raise awareness on environmental issues, rights, and social inclusion through school partnerships and public campaigns. Education is at the heart of every sustainable solution — shaping future generations to be informed and responsible citizens.

Climate Resilience

Climate Resilience

We work with communities to restore degraded land, plant trees, and improve water management. Through environmental education and local conservation, GDO helps people adapt to the changing climate while protecting natural resources.

Community Development

Community Development

Our programs empower youth and women through leadership, education, and skills training. We encourage civic participation and create opportunities for people to engage in peacebuilding, advocacy, and local governance.

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

Clean water and sanitation are essential for health and dignity. GDO supports the construction and rehabilitation of water systems, hygiene promotion campaigns, and distribution of hygiene kits in rural communities.

Vocational Training & Market Access

Vocational Training & Market Access

We help young people and women gain practical skills and connect with local markets. Through small enterprise support and cooperative development, GDO creates pathways for economic independence.

Featured Project: Sanaag Climate Education Campaign

Location: Sanaag Region, Somaliland
Duration: February – August 2025
Status: Ongoing

The Sanaag Climate Education Campaign was GDO’s first major field initiative — designed to raise awareness on environmental protection, reforestation, and sustainable water use. Working with schools, local leaders, and women’s groups, the campaign reached more than 1,000 people across three districts. Community workshops focused on tree planting, soil management, and the importance of protecting grazing land from overuse.

As a result, three community-led conservation zones were established, reducing illegal deforestation by nearly 40%.
This project represents the foundation of GDO’s long-term commitment to environmental education and grassroots climate action.
